Is Toothpaste Safe to Swallow?

When brushing your teeth, it’s easy to accidentally swallow a bit of toothpaste, especially for kids. But is it actually safe to swallow? Let’s look at what’s in toothpaste and what happens if you ingest it.

 A Little Bit Won’t Hurt

Most adults and children accidentally swallow a small amount of toothpaste from time to time. The good news is that a tiny amount is not harmful. Toothpaste is designed for cleaning your teeth, not eating, but an occasional small swallow is generally nothing to worry about.

Why You Shouldn’t Make It a Habit

Toothpaste contains fluoride, which is very effective at protecting teeth from decay. However, when swallowed in large quantities, fluoride can cause:

  • Stomach upset or nausea
  • Fluorosis (white or brown marks on developing teeth in children)
  • Toxicity in extreme cases (very rare and usually only from consuming large amounts)

This is why toothpaste tubes carry a warning not to swallow and why only a pea-sized amount is recommended for children.

 Tips for Parents

If you have young children:

  • Use only a rice–grain–sized smear of toothpaste for kids under 3
  • Supervise brushing until they can spit properly
  • Teach them to spit, not swallow, after brushing

This helps them get the benefits of fluoride without the risk.

What to Do if You Accidentally Swallow Some

If you or your child swallows a small amount while brushing, don’t panic! Rinse your mouth with water and monitor for any tummy upset.
If a large amount (like half a tube or more) is swallowed, call the Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26 in Australia) or seek medical advice immediately.

 The Takeaway

Toothpaste is safe and beneficial when used correctly — don’t treat it like food. A little bit swallowed by accident is fine, but regular swallowing or eating toothpaste can cause problems, especially for children.

At Dural Dental Practice, we’re happy to help you and your family develop healthy brushing habits and choose the right toothpaste.
