Restorative treatment helps repair teeth that have been damaged or lost through decay or fractured in accidents. It can also be used to improve appearance by closing gaps, treating discoloured or unsightly teeth and for complete cosmetic makeovers.
At Dural Dental Practice we take the time and care to try to preserve as much sound tooth structure and as many teeth as possible. When a patient presents with a very badly broken tooth or teeth, we begin with a comprehensive examination looking both at individual teeth as well as how they function together. An overall plan is then set. Each piece of restorative dentistry is undertaken with great care and attention to detail. Our dental technicians are involved in the detail of each case and bespoke treatment is provided that is tailored to the individual patient’s needs. Our philosophy is to preserve natural teeth where possible.
Crowns / Onlays
Crowns (‘caps’) or Onlays may be made from porcelain, gold or high strength indirect composite materials. They provide an ideal way to strengthen teeth that have been damaged or weakened as a result of extensive decay or large fillings and to repair unsightly teeth. Porcelain crowns are carefully crafted to look natural and blend in with the rest of your teeth.
A bridge is one of the options used to replace a missing tooth. It is attached to adjacent teeth on either side of the gap. The teeth need to be carefully prepared to specific dimensions for the bridge to fit on top with the false tooth in between. Each bridge is individually tailored to achieve the best aesthetic and functional result.
The steps involved for Crowns / Bridges
- Following a thorough examination and x-rays, we will be able to advise you whether your case is suitable for crown/bridge treatment. We will discuss the material that best suits your restoration and discuss any concerns you may have.
- The teeth are then carefully prepared to create space for the crown / bridge and an impression (mould) is taken. This mould is sent to a laboratory where a master technician fabricates the crown / bridge over a two week period. During this time a provisional (temporary) crown or bridge is placed over the prepared teeth.
- Once fabricated the crown / bridge is tried in to ensure precise fit, good aesthetics and harmony with your bite before being cemented in place. The materials from which the crowns and bridges are made do not deteriorate with time but the underlying tooth structure is still susceptible to decay and gum disease therefore you will be shown how to brush and floss daily around your new restoration.
A denture is a removable prosthesis made of acrylic or a combination of metal and acrylic and is used to replace missing teeth. Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth are missing whereas complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing. Well made dentures will help you to eat and improve your appearance by compensating for bone loss around the jaw caused by missing teeth.
