A Simple Guide for Patients
Why Teeth Become Sensitive
You feel a sharp “zing” when cold, sweet, or hot touches your tooth because the inner part of the tooth (dentine) is exposed. This happens when:
- Gums shrink back (gum recession) → exposes the root
- Enamel wears away from acids
- Brushing too hard
- Grinding/clenching
- Tooth decay or cracks
- Acid reflux (GERD)
What Is Gum Recession?
Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue pulls away from the tooth, exposing the root.
Roots are softer and more sensitive than enamel, so they hurt more and wear faster.
Common causes:
- Hard brushing
- Hard toothbrushes
- Natural thin gums
- Gum disease
- Grinding
- Past orthodontic movement
What You Can Do at Home
Use a desensitising toothpaste
Helps block the sensitive dentine tubes in the tooth. Use twice daily.
Look for:
- Stannous fluoride
- Potassium nitrate
Use strengthening creams/pastes
These help rebuild and protect the surface:
- MI Paste / MI Paste Plus
- Hydroxyapatite toothpastes E.g. Toothmousse Plus
Brush gently
- Soft toothbrush only
- Light pressure
- Small circles, no scrubbing
Be careful with acidic foods
Limit:
- Citrus & lemons
- Soft drinks
- Sports/energy drinks
- Fruit juice
- Apple cider vinegar
- Chewable or effervescent vitamins (e.g., Berocca, Vitamin C)
After acids: rinse with water and wait 30–60 mins before brushing.
Reflux (GERD)
Stomach acid can reach your mouth and quickly damage enamel.
If you have frequent heartburn, sour taste, or night reflux, speak with your GP — treating reflux protects your teeth.
What Your Dentist Can Do
- Fluoride varnish or desensitising coatings
- Bonding to cover exposed roots
- Gum grafting (for severe recession) to cover and protect the root
When to See a Dentist
- Sensitivity is new or getting worse
- You can see the yellow root
- Gums look like they’re shrinking
- Home care hasn’t helped after 2–4 weeks
- You suspect reflux
Quick Start Plan
- Switch to a stannous fluoride or potassium nitrate toothpaste.
- Brush softly and gently.
- Add MI Paste or hydroxyapatite toothpaste if still sensitive.
- Cut back on acids.
- Visit a dentist if not improving.
