White Spots After Braces: What Are They and Can They Be Prevented?

Orthodontic treatment can create a beautiful, straight smile—but keeping your teeth clean during treatment is just as important as straightening them.

One of the most common problems we see during orthodontic treatment is white spot lesions. These are early signs of tooth decay that can develop around brackets if plaque isn’t removed effectively.

What Are White Spot Lesions?

White spot lesions are areas where the enamel has begun to lose minerals, a process called demineralisation. They appear as chalky white, opaque patches on the surface of the tooth, especially around orthodontic brackets.

Although they aren’t usually cavities yet, they are an early warning sign that the tooth is being damaged.

Why Do They Develop?

Braces create extra places for plaque and food to collect, making it harder to clean your teeth properly.

When plaque remains on the teeth, bacteria produce acids that dissolve minerals from the enamel. Frequent sugary snacks and drinks increase these acid attacks, making white spot lesions more likely to develop.

Can They Be Prevented?

Absolutely. Prevention is much easier than treatment.

The best ways to reduce your risk include:

  • Brushing thoroughly twice a day, paying extra attention around brackets and wires.
  • Cleaning between your teeth every day using floss, interdental brushes, water flossers or orthodontic cleaning aids.
  • Using a fluoride toothpaste every day.
  • Limiting sugary foods and drinks, especially between meals.
  • Attending regular dental check-ups and professional cleans throughout orthodontic treatment.
  • Following any additional fluoride recommendations from your dentist or orthodontist if you’re at higher risk.

Can White Spot Lesions Be Treated?

If detected early, white spot lesions can often improve with good oral hygiene and fluoride, allowing some minerals to return to the enamel.

Once the braces are removed, the white areas may become less noticeable over time, but some may remain permanently if the enamel damage was significant.

In more noticeable cases, treatments such as sealants, micro abrasion, professional whitening, or composite bonding may improve their appearance, depending on the severity.

The Bottom Line

Straight teeth are only part of a healthy smile. Looking after your teeth during orthodontic treatment is essential to prevent white spot lesions and maintain strong, healthy enamel.

At Dural Dental Practice, we work closely with our visiting orthodontist, Dr Vivaldi, to help patients achieve not only straight teeth but healthy teeth too. Regular dental check-ups, professional cleans, and excellent home care are the best ways to keep your smile looking its best during and after orthodontic treatment.
